Humble Yet Unafraid
Review and Photos by
Brianna Austin
s she
stood upon the stage, her band vamping in the background, Lisa
Jackson paid homage to all the great performers that stood on
this, the CBGB stage before her. She spoke of legends and
pioneers. The crowd reacted with cheers as she momentarily
stepped back. The band built to a climax as she lunged forward
and said "and I am humble, yet unafraid." The delivery
was powerful and effective.

When watching an athlete you can always tell those who want
to win versus those that are afraid of loosing. Tonight Lisa
Jackson and Girl Friday played to win. They were tight, Lisa's
voice was strong, and they engaged the audience with a new show
that radiated confidence.

Just when I thought it couldn't have gotten any better, Jayne
Country took the stage to do a duet with Lisa. All I can say is
it was great, and you have to see the two of them together -
which you can do at The Slipper Room (NYC) Wednesday 18, 2002.
The event tonight was called "Homocorps", an event
that has been hosted on several occasions at the legendary rock
club CBGB's, located at 313 Bowery on the lower east side of
NYC. It featured three bands, All
The Pretty Horses, The Velvet
Mafia and Lisa
Jackson & Girl Friday.
The
crowd was rockin!

The bands were all different in style. All The Pretty Horses,
a dark glam band with the 6' transsexual Venus as their lead
singer, SIREN MAGAZINE referred to "one of the most
visually-arresting bands you may ever see". Combining a
haunting, hard-edged music that touches both on Ziggy Stardust
and Black Sabbath simultaneously with a fierce stage act, it's
performance art at the highest level.

Dean
Johnson of Velvet Mafia |
The Velvet Mafia is a high charged rock-punk band. Their lead
singer, the 6'6" drag-queen Dean Johnson, is engaging and
dramatic, and the crowd loved him. Tower of Song referred to
them as "a full frontal assault of in-yer-face homocore
party rock".
Lorna and I had a terrific time and we strongly recommend
seeing any or all of these bands.
