The
club, formally SPA (known for it’s trans variant and
celebrity clientele), has
been redesigned. The front room with couches
throughout looks more like a living room with a bar,
but that doesn’t stop the crowd from filling the
dance floor. I was there to see Kevin Aviance (GTM V5
N5), who was finishing up an 18-city promo tour. I
showed up early, after all, if Village Voice columnist
Mike Musto could be turned away at the reopening of
the Crow Bar, then certainly I could …nah.
I strolled the club’s front and back room and
met some of the partygoers, and as the PICS show, they
were all in good cheer.
Pricilla told me, “I love
the vibe here, if I want to meet a guy I could go
anywhere, here I can have fun and not be hassled”.
Oh, beware the heterosexual cross dresser m’ lady, a
wolf in ladies underwear.
There was a local designer who presented a
short fashion show, which the crowd seemed to enjoy.
The promoter was a doll, the cute fellow in white,
that’s the designer (to the right), Antoine, in the VIP
corner with his entourage.
Zelma Davis (C + C
Music Factory) made a surprise appearance and gave the
crowd a holiday song, and then Kevin took the stage
and encouraged all the creative talent in the
community to express themselves, “that’s what
it’s all about,” she said. And then she expressed
herself by filling the stage creating her own high
octane energy, singing Fire,” from the new album
“Entity.”
Afterwards, while I spoke with Kevin in
the dressing room Sheryl, a NYC choreographer, tried
modeling, cute isn’t she? Kevin was pre-occupied
changing into something a little more comfortable to
meet and greet the fans. Amanda Lepore and
Brandon Olsen were on hand doing what they do
best, looking fabulous.
Boy George showed up as the guest DJ and
started spinning, and the beat goes on. Plaid (76
East 13th St. bet. Broadway & 4th Ave.)
Thurs and Saturdays.
